Our friend Doug over at The Publics just had his latest piece published in Vice. Brace yourself for a strange journey through a side of Vancouver that is seldom seen (and for good reason) in the article below:
“Yvonne came from Hong Kong a couple of months ago. She was told she would able to get modeling work but has given up hope and resigned herself to lying around all day in her live/work brothel. Her pimp told her she will be moving to Calgary soon, so she wants to see the ocean once again before she leaves.” (- Douglas Haddow, Vice Magazine)
(I also strongly recommend you make The Publics one of your daily interweb stops. Dude definitely holds it down over there, on the daily. (Sorry for posting this without “propa” authorization dude… but I can post what ever I want!))
So the Adbusters “hipster” article that caused so much controversy (written by: Doug Haddow, read it here) has now also inspired a party. I guess they’re trying to show that they’re unfazed by the article by embracing its title and using it as their own. Or maybe the organizers aren’t like the thousands of hipsters that got all mad about it, and just think it’s a funny name for a party.
Aren’t there like two or three different types of people that get called hipsters right now though? Check out the current issue of XXL or one of those other mags. They have Wale, Kidz In The Hall, Mickey Factz and the Cool Kids in there featured in some article about the “hip(ster) hop” new school or something. (Who stole the term I made up last November, by the way? Everyone, I guess.) I don’t know if those dudes signed up for that (probably not!) but I’m glad I don’t fall into the category based on any of the hipster criteria of either article.
More info about all the “controversy” after the jump…
I was walking in Gastown last night and noticed the new newspaper box across the street from the Lamplighter. My bad if I’m late on this… at some point I think I remember reading about the mag but forgot about it until I was staring at it. Sneeze is a skate mag, it’s conceptual… and on some Vancouver shit. I’d try to comment on where it’s printed but the thing is huge, I’ve only had the chance to look through it but the editor’s letter (by “MR.SNEEZE”) is fresh, read it after the jump…
